I ~ Oshwal Community

Since my honeymoon in Kenya, I was longing to visit that country again to enjoy the beauty of nature and have another safari for wildlife. Kenya is known for its safaris, diverse tropical climate, and expansive wildlife reserves and national parks such as the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Mount Kenya National Park, Nairobi National park and few others. The hunter's "Big Five" i.e. lion, rhino, leopard, Elephant, Cape buffalo are seen here hunting and grazing along with other animals such as giraffe, hippopotamus, cheetah, zebra, and crocodile. These parks are also habitats for many other animals like in Noah's ark. It was at the treetop hotel (a hotel built on the top of the trees) in Aberdare National Park at Nyeri, where Queen Elizabeth ascended the treetop as a princess to sleep and then descended as the Queen of the United Kingdom because her father King George VI passed away while she was asleep which occurred on the night of 5/6 February 1952. I knew some people, including my cousin Rosily along with her husband Alex, were working in Kenya as teachers. So I went on a voyage to Kenya on the 17th of February 1990 and landed at Jomo Kenyatta International airport. My friend Eugene was there to welcome me.
Eugene informed me of a possible physics teacher vacancy that could arise at Oshwal High school, Nairobi. The next day I went to Oshwal High school and after a brief encounter with the secretary Mrs. Gumo (I didn't have an appointment), I entered the Principal's office. The Principal Mr. S. K. Gupta, a cunning, shrewd old man peered at me through the thick lenses. He was impressed by my gatecrashing and personal marketing, that he asked me to attend an interview with the School Management Committee on the following evening at 6.00 pm. Eugene was struck with awe that he offered me his wedding suit to wear for the interview. There were seven members of the committee with Mr. R.C. Shah as the Chairman and Mr. Kiran Shah as the honorary secretary. They were very keen to hear about the Nigerian schools, their educational structure, and the culture. After a long deliberation, they offered me the job and asked me to wait for a month to obtain the work permit.
Oshwal is a Gujarati community from India. Around 1910, few Oshwal came to Kenya to work in the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway line during the British colonialism. Slowly they ventured into small scale businesses. As the community grew, they established Visa Oshwal Community formally in 1934 and the Oshwal Education Relief Board, Nairobi in 1941. Oshwal Nursery School, Oshwal Primary School, and Oshwal High School were operating under the guidance of the Board when I joined Oshwal. Each School had its own management committee and operated independently. The Visa Oshwal Girls Secondary School was operating under the guidance of the Visa Oshwal Community as a separate organization. They also owned M.P. Shah Hospital, Oshwal Complex, Oshwal Centre and the Oshwal Mahajanwadi. The business started by the members of the Oshwal had flourished so much that by 1990 they had become one of the richest Asian Community in Kenya. Most of the industries belonged to them and held import license for various goods items. In Nairobi, they carved their own residential areas in Parklands, Westlands, General Muthaigai, Spring Valley, Gigiri, Ngara and Pangani. There was a concentration of Asian Community in other parts of the country like Mombasa, Nyeri, Nakuru, Eldoret and Makindu. The community was also involved in a lot of charity work. It is quite amazing to see how the Gujarati Community of India has established their own empire in a foreign country through sheer determination and hard work in a span of eighty years and adopted Kenya as their own country.
