III ~ Farewell speech

Respected Principal, Prof. S.L. Thomas, and beloved teachers, it gives me immense pleasure to express my sentiments of gratitude to all of you for what you have been doing for us during the last three years.

Familiarity breeds contempt - they say. I cannot subscribe to this view. The more familiar and friendly, we became with our Principal, professor and teachers, the more our admiration and genuine respect for them have risen. Looking back on the long years spent at St. Berchmans, we feel happy to say that those years were the happiest of our lives. Our hearts are heavy when we think that we will have to part company with you formally very soon. It just shows that human happiness is momentary and willy-nilly, we have to part with people who have been a source of inspiration, guidance and friendliness. That is the inexorable law of life and we are incapable of changing it.

We are the second batch of the reorganized B.Sc. Course. Though we belong to the B.Sc. General course, we were also given equal facilities in the study of theory and equal opportunities for doing laboratory lessons. We are indeed sincerely grateful to our beloved professor and lecturers of the Department of Physics for this special consideration shown to us.

We are legitimately proud in placing on record the fact that we have not in any way tarnished the good name and fame of beloved Alma Mater. I do not, however, intend to gloat over the stir caused by us in connection with the demand for an increase of seats for M.Sc. So that more B.Sc. (General) students also get admission to the post graduate course in Physics. This was an agitation intended against the university and not against the college or the staff. The good result of the agitation was that the number of seats for the course was increased.

It gives me great pleasure to express our esteem and sincere gratitude to all our teachers, - Prof. S.L. Thomas, N.S, Nair, J.P. Rao, K.K. John, M.J. James, P.C. Jacob and P.J. Thomas. They have been not only our teachers, but also friends, philosophers and, guides to us. Mr. M.J. James and Mr. P.C. Jacob has been our constant companions. Our special thanks are due to Mr. K.K. John, the President of the Physics Association. He has been taking much interest in the working of the association and guided us in all the activities. His talk on space travel unraveled the mysteries behind the epic journey of man to the moon. We thank him sincerely for what he has been doing for us.

All of us are aware that Rt. Rev. Mgr. Kalasserry, our beloved Principal will soon be retired from the Principalship of St. Berchmans. After long years of dedicated, sincere and efficient service to the cause of education and to St. Berchmans, he is going to retire, full of honors and gratitude from the staff, students, and the public. All of you will agree with me when I say that Mgr. Kalasserry tenure of office of Principalship and achievements will be written in letters of gold in the annals of St. Berchmans. If Rev. Fr. Purackal is known as the father of St. Berchmans, Mgr. Kalasserry is surely the mother of St. Berchmans. He has not only raised its prestige of this institution to its zenith, but also was responsible for starting various courses of studies especially the post graduate departments. If St. Berchmans is the premier institution of Kerala today, the credit for it should go primarily to Mgr. Kalasserry. St. Berchmans can never forget the services rendered to her by him.

In fine, we wish you all, health, wealth and happiness. May we always remain worthy of this great institution which has imparted everything that is good to us through the dedicated and sincere teachers. Good-bye till we meet again.
